Segment I
- The student must be at least 14 years and 8 months of age by the first day of class.
- They also must have written permission from a parent or guardian and their birth certificate for the first class.
- The Segment 1 class consists of 24 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind the wheel training.
- The classroom will lead up to taking the State of Michigan Level 1 Learners License Written Test.
- The student will be required to achieve a 70% or higher on the written test and they must meet all standards. set by the State of Michigan and Maier Driver Education during their behind the wheel portion of the class.
- When the student meets all criteria, they will be given a level 1 graduated licence which allows them to drive with any adult over the age of 21 who has a valid driver's license.

Segment II
- The student must have successfully completed a Segment 1 class and have taken his/her Segment 1 permit to the Secretary of State to obtain their level 1 license.
- Before enrolling in Segment 2, the student must have had their level 1 license for a minimum of 90 days and must have logged 30 hours of driving and 2 night time drives.
- Segment 2 class consists of three, 2 hour, days of classroom instruction.
- The student must pass a written test achieving at least 70%.
Students can get a head start with Segment II by printing out the State of Michigan Driver Education Segment II Facts Sheets/Handout. This 11 page packet is the "Mini-textbook" for the class. These packets will be available to students the first night of class as well.
Also, with Segment II, students must bring their white, Level 1 Certificate with them on the first day of class.
